Nature lovers look out for the numerous wildlife parks and sanctuaries. Lets have a look at them :-

Karnala Bird Sanctuary
Best time to visit July-September and October-April.
A paradise for bird watchers, take your binoculars and get ready for spotting some rare exotic birds. The two seasons for bird watching here are July - September when you can spot paradise flycatcher, white rumped shama, malabar whistling thrush, magpie robin, crested serpent eagle and racket tailed drongo. October - December attracts migratory birds like Ashy minivet, blackbird, black headed cuckoo shrike, blue throat and blue headed rock thrush. Teak trees rule the landscape and the forest is packed with flame of the forest, amaltash or laburnum, babul, jamun, mango, peepal, bamboo and red silk cotton trees. Nearby the Karnala fort which was originally used by the Marathas for its strategic location. The fort affords a magnificient view of the countryside for miles around. On a clear day you can catch sight of the Mumbai coastline barely 30 kms away.

How to reach
  • 1 hour drive from Mumbai on the Mumbai - Goa highway NH17
  • 2 hr drive via Thane creek and Panvel.
  • Central Railway trains from CST stop at Panvel which is 15 mins drive from the sanctuary.
  • You can take a State Transport bus which runs regularly between Mumbai Central and Karnataka. From Vashi it is a half an hour drive nearly.

Bhamragarh Wildlife Sanctuary
Best time to visit - February to May

One of the beautiful wildlife sancturies in India with abundant greenery and woods with grasslands. The natural landscape has two rivers and cliffs, caves enhancing its beauty. Its home to a number of wild animals like Leopard, Jungle fowl, barking deer, blue bull, wild boar, sloth bear, flying squirrel etc.  Also visit the Hemalkasa Lok Biradari project run by Dr Prakash Amte. Winter sets in from December to Feburary followed by summer from March to May. The south west monsoon season if from June to September and the post monsoon season is during October and November

How to reach
  • Nagpur is the closest airport 5-6 hour drive form here via Chandrapur
  • The nearest railway station is Ballarpur (on Delhi-Chennai mainline) and a 3 hour drive
  • The nearest bus station are Aheri and then a 2 hour drive, Ballarpur and Chandrapur and then a 3 hour drive.

Bor Wildlife sanctuary
Best time to visit April - May
A great picnic spot beacuse of the Bor dam, visit this reservoir for its wide spectrum of wildlife which includes the Sambhar, cheetal, barking deer, nilgai, tigers, leopards and wild dogs.

How to reach
  • Nagpur is the nearest airport and a 1 hour drive
  • The nearest bus station is Hingni and then a 10 min drive
  • The nearest railway station is Wardha and then a half and hour drive

Chaprala Wildlife Sanctuary
Best time to visit February - May

The forest is abundant in greenery and are the tropical deciduous trees, you can track wild animals like the tiger, leopard, sloth bear, wild dogs etc. The endangered species of Indian python and Indian Monitor lizard are also seen here. Winter is from December to February and summer from March to May. The monsoon season is from June to September.

How to reach
  • The nearest airport is Nagpur and then a 4 hour drive via Chandrapur
  • The nearest railway station is Ballarpur (Delhi - Chennai line) and then 1 hour drive
  • The nearest bus stand area Chandrapur and Ballarpur.

Chikhaldara Wildlife Sanctuary
Best time to visit is October to June

Plan an interesting day trip to this popular destination with coffee plantations. Animals like tiger, leopard, sloth bear, wild dog, jackal, sambar, Indian bison, chaurasingha, ratel, flying squirrel, wild boar, langur, Rhesus monkey, porcupine, pangolin, mouse deer etc.

Nearby you can visit the Narnala fort, Melghat tiger reserve, Gavilgad fort, Nehru botanical gardens, Semodah lake and the Tribal museum. The forts are worth visiting especially for history and architecture buffs. MTDC resorts located nearby arrange forest safaris and also provide water sport facilities.

Chikhaldara receives an annual rainfall of 154cms. Temp may vary from 39 degrees in summer to 5 degree in winter.

  • Nearest railhead is Badnera
  • State transport buses ply from Amravati and Nagpur to Chikhaldara.

Dajipur Bison sanctuary
Best time to visit is February to April

Visit Dajipur for the sight of one of the splendid specimens of wild oxen in the world The Indian Bison or Gaur. Known as one of the largest living land animals, few others match the charm and muscled power of the Indian bison. If you are visiting during the mating season when you might hear the mating call of the male, a clear resonant tone which is known to carry across more than 1.5 kms. Stop to see tha Gagangiri Maharaj's Math in the forest which is part of the ancient sacred grove, for a welcome detour. The sanctuary is open from November to June which covers the winter and summer seasons.

  • The nearest railhead is Kolhapur on the South Central Railway.

Nazgira Wildlife Sanctuary
Best time to visit is April to May

Nazgira has over 36 species of reptiles, 166 species of birds and animals like the tiger, leopard, aloth bear, sambar, four headed antelope, blue bull, chital, barking deer, mouse deer, civet cats, jackal, jungle cats, striped hyenas and more. The temperature here ia moderate and pleasant round the year.

How to reach
  • The nearest airport is Nagpur
  • The nearest bus stand is Sakoli and the half an hour drive
  • The nearest railway stations are Nagpur and then a 2 hr drive, Gondla and then a 45 min drive.

Navegaon National Park
Best time is April to May(Wildlife) and October to June (Bird Spotting)

The National park is a deer park, an aviary and has 3 landscaped gardens and the Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary all rolled into one. A treat for bird watchers is that the Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is home to large number of bird species found across Maharashtra. Spot the tiger, panther, bison, sambar, nilgai, chital, wild boar, sloth bear, wild dog, langur etc. Make the most of the unique experience by staying in tree top houses here and sign up for a Jungle safari or ride a power sailboat on the lake. The temperature is pleasant all throughout the year.

  • The nearest airport is  Nagpur and then two and a half hour drive
  • The nearest rail head is Deulgaun (from Navegaon on the Chandrapur-Gondla Railway line) and then a 5 minute drive.
  • The nearest bus stand is Navegaon and then a 15 min drive.

Pench Tiger Reserve
Best time to visit is February to April

The official tiger reserve of India for sightseeing the regal and magnificent tiger as well as for its abundance of wildlife in the form of 33 species of mammals, 164 species of birds, 50 species of fish, 10 species of amphibians, 30 species of reptiles and insects. The Pench Tiger is 4 different forest regions in one, with its extravagance of trees, shrubs, grasses, climbers, weeds and herbs with teak being the most prominent of the tree species. There are 3 distinct seasons Summer is from Feburary to the middle of June. The Monsoon season sets in from mid June and lasts till October. Winter starts in October with low temperatures throughout December - January.

The Pench National park is open to visitors from 1st October to 30th June each year and remains closed during the rainy season (July-September)

  • Nagpur is the nearest airport and then 1 hr drive
  • Nagpur is the nearest railway station
  • Ramtek has a regular bus service to Pench a half an hour drive.

Tadola Andhari Tiger Reserve
Best time to visit February - May

This reserve also known as the Jewel of Vidharbha is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. The tiger is the main attraction here - track and see this royal beast up close, either at the lake or in the heart of the rich deciduous forests. With around 69 tigers, visitors of Tadoba are most likely to spot this majestic beast roaming freely in its natural habitat. You can also spot a chital, sambar, barking deer, chaurasingha, gaur, nilgai, sloth bear, wild dog, wild boar and leopard.

As night falls look out for the small Indian civet, Palm Civet, Ratel and Flying Squirell. The lake in Tadoba attracts many water birds like cattle egrets, purple moorhens and jackarnas. The Tadoba lake also has marsh crocodiles which were once common all over Maharashtra.

The jungle safari in a  12 seater minibus is a wonderful experience to know and see the park. Winter is from December to February. This is followed by summer from March to May, the monsoon season from June to September and the post monsoon season from October to November.

  • The nearest airport is Nagpur and then a 2 and a half km drive via Umrer, Bhisland and Chimur
  • The nearest railway station is Chandrapur and then a 1 and a half km journey
  • The nearest main bus stand is Chandrapur and Chimur and then a half an hour drive.

Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary
Best time to visit April to May

Spenda day in the lap of nature at this tranquil sanctuary known for its abundant vegetation and greenery. The main attractions of this sanctuary are the pecock, wild boar and bear. Temperature is pleasant all the year round.

How to reach
  • Nagpur is the nearest airport and then a 2 hour drive
  • Half an hour drive from the railway stations
  • The nearest bus station is Pandharkawada and then a half an hour drive.
