What to see in
Bhopal
The capital of Madhya Pradesh, is a amalgum of scenic beauty and a proud heritage with modern urban planning. An Afgan soldier of fortuen, Dost Mohammed (1708-1740) was the founder of the existing city, which is situated on the site of the 11th century city, Bhojpal founded by the legendary Raja Bhoja. Bhopal represents a harmonic symphony of the old and the new. The old city with its teeming market places, beautiful mosques and quaint palaces still bears the aristocratic imprint of its former rulers.
Panchmarhi
Panchmarhi is Madhya Pradesh's verdant gem. A lovely hill resort girdled by the Satpura ranges, it offers absolute tranquility. Bridle paths lead into placid forest grooves, of wild bamboo and jamun, dense sal forests and delicate bamboo thickets.
Bhedaghat
Soaring in glittering splendour, the Marble Rocks of Bhedaghat rise to a 100ft on either side of the Narmada and are a treat to behold along with the spectacular Dhuandhar falls.
Jabalpur
Pleasure resort and capital of the Gond kings during the 12th century Jabalpur was later the seat of kalchuri dynasty. The Marathas held sway over Jabalpur until 1817 when British wrested it from them and left their impression on the spacious cantonment with its colonial residences and barracks.
Kanha National Park
Kanha's sal and bamboo forests rolling grasslands and meandering streams stretch over 940 sq kms in dramatic natural splendour. It is home to an amazing variety of mammals including the tiger, leopard and bison. It is also the only habitat of the rare Hardground Barasingha. Besides there are over 200 species of birds making Kanha a bird watcher's paradise.
