The State is also important to Buddhism since its early days. The Chaukhandi Stupa marks the spot where Buddha met his first disciples. The Dhamek Stupa in Sarnath commemorates Buddha's first sermon. Also the town of Kushinagar is where Gautama Buddha died.

Destinations in U.P
Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, also has several beautiful historical monuments such as Bara Imambara and Chhota Imambara. It has also preserved the damaged complex of the Oudh-period British Resident's quarters, which are being restored now.
Places to see in Uttar Pradesh :-

Agra
The flower of the Mughal empirein acendance, Agra is also home to that immortal epitome of love, Taj Mahla. Though the city just saw the rising of just three generations, it is rich in archtectural legacy. Also in the city Fatehpur Sikri is being one of the sought after destinations in India.

Allahabad
Is also known as Prayag. It is one of the four sites of the Kumbh Mela apart from Haridwar, Ujjain and Nasik. It is a very important place for Hindus as the three rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati meet each other named the Triveni Sangam. 

Bareilly
Bareily located on the Ramganga river. Bareily also has lots of Hindu temples.



Gorakhpur
Gorakhpur has a lot of temples and monuments which makes it a historical wonder. The Gorakhnath temple is 4 Kms. from Gorakhpur  is dedicated to great yogi Gorakhnath. An ancient temple of Lord Vishnu made of Kasauti  (Black)  stone and Geetha Vatika where 24 hours prayers are offered to Radha is a centre of attraction here. Imambara was built by Hajrat saint Roshan Ali Shah where a smoke fire is  maintained  continuously  after sufi Saint   death. Ramgarh Tal is a huge and natural lake which attracts tourist.

Jhansi
Named after Rani Lakshmi  Bai the Queen of Jhansi was a  great   nationalist   heroine  of  the  first war of India freedom, a symbol  of  resistance to  the British rule in India. There is a lot to see in Jhansi ranging from the Paricha Dam which is built on the river Betwa to The Todi Fathepur fort is built on a hillock. Orcha, one of the ancient city situated on the bank of Betwa is also a historical place. Shivpuri, the summer capital of the scindia rulers of Gwalior. It is famous for its forests, wild animals and natural surroundings. Sonagiri is the sacred Jain hill with over 77 Jain temples. Khajuraho temples are a rare gift to the world and a must see.

Kanpur
Kanpur is an important historical town. Kannauj, the city of perfumes is also situated on G.T. road 80 kms. away from Kanpur. Temples dedicated to Lord Shiva like Aanandeshwar temple, Siddheshwar temple, Balkhandeshwar temple and Jageshwar temple are located here. A  zoo of international standard is also situated in Kanpur


Lucknow 
Lucknow is a historic city. Avadh is claimed to be among the most ancient of Hindu states. The city of Ayodhya was reported to be full of great riches and the birth place of Shri Ram. Natural attractions accessible from Lucknow are Katarnia Ghat, Dudhwa National Park, Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary and Samaspur Bird Sanctuary. The Asafi Imambara (popularly known as Bara Imambara), the Chhota Imambara, Residency, and Shah Najaf are monuments of architectural importance at Lucknow.

Varanasi (Banaras).
Varanasi is the City of  LORD SHIVA. Famous for Banarasi Saree,Handicrafts, Jari Work, Wooden Items. Varanasi, or Benaras, (also  known  as Kashi)  is  one  of the oldest living cities in the world. Sarnath renowned for ancient remains of  Bhuddhist  stupas,  monasteries  and  temples, is situated at a distance of 6 kms. to the north of Varanasi city. 14 km. from Varanasi , on the opposite bank of river Ganga Ramnagar lies. The fort at Ramnagar houses a museum displaying the Royal collection which includes vintage Cars, Royal palkies, an armoury of swords and old guns, ivory work and antique clocks. 

Mathura
Mathura widely known as birth place of lord Krishna is located on the western  bank of river Yamuna. 15 Km. north of Mathura on the same bank of Yamuna, lies the celebrated town of Vrindavan. There are hundred of shrines in the town, as also numerous ghats and several sacred tanks, of which one called Brahama kund and another named Govinda kund are the most highly venerated. 26 Km from Mathura along the road to Deeg. It is named after the name of the Goverdhan Hillock.
