The temples of Khajuraho are India's unique gift to the world, representing a paean to love, life and joy, perfect in execution and sublime in expression. Life in every form and mood has been captured in stone, testifying to the craftsmen's artistry and the extraordinary breadth of the vision of the Chandela Rajputs. The Khajuraho temples were built in a short span of a hundred years, from 950-1050 A.D. in a truly inspired burst of creativity. Of the 85 original temples, 22 still survive consitituting one of the world's greatest artistic wonders.
Khajuraho Dance festival (Feburary mid)
Khajuraho festival of dances draws the best classical dancers in the country every year who perform against the spectacular backdrop of the floodlit temples. The past and the present silhoutted against the glow of the setting sun as the exquisite backdrop for the performers. In a setting where the earthly and the divine create perfect harmony - anevent that celebrates the pure magic of the rich classical dance traditions of India. As dusk falls the temples are lit up in a soft dream like eternal stage. The finest exponents of different classical Indian styles are represented - Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Manipuri and many more. Having international status under the Govt of India programme categories, this 7 day extravaganza is a unique treat for connoisseurs from all over the world.
Raneh falls (20 kms from Khajuraho)
The river Ken river forms a 5 kilometre long, and (98 ft) deep canyon, with a series of waterfalls. The Ken Gharial Sanctuary is also nearby.
Pandav falls (25kms from Raneh)
The Pandav Falls is located on a tributary of the Ken River, and later falls down (98ft ) to join Ken again. The name has been got from the Pandava brothers, there are caves and temples nearby.
Panna National park (12kms from Pandav falls)
Panna National Park spreads along the river Ken. Its jungles harbour several species of wildlife. The tiger can be glimpsed here along with other rare species such as leopard, wolf, gharial, herds of nilgai, chinkara, sambar etc.
Orchha's grandeur has been captured in stone, frozen in time, a rich legacy of all ages. The palaces and temples built by the Bundela rulers in the 16th and 17th centuries retain much of their pristine perfection. Founded in the 16th century, Orchha boasts of the exquisite Jehangir Mahal and tired palace crowned by graceful chhatris. In Raj Mahal and Laxminarayan temple vibrant murals bring the walls and celings alive.
