What to see
Bhojpur (28 kms)
Bhojpur is famous for its exquisite 11th century Shiva temple, Bhojeshwar and the lake built by Raja Bhoja Paramara. The temple also houses an enormous 7.5ft 'shivalingam' carved out of a single stone.
Bhimbetka (46 kms)
The Vindhya mountain range is covered by huge rocks, and recent discoveries here of over 600 rock shelters (the largest group in the world) have revealed paintings that date to the early stone age.
Panchmarhi is Madhya Pradesh's verdant gem. A lovely hill resort girdled by the Satpura ranges, it offers absolute tranquility. Bridle paths lead into placid forest grooves, of wild bamboo and jamun, dense sal forests and delicate bamboo thickets.
