The charm of Mukteshwar is said to have captured Jim Corbett when he came here to hunt a tiger. The 7,500ft high Kumaon hills are a beauty in itself being covered by the tallest conifers and orchards of apple, peach, plum, apricots. The Himalayan snow peaks at a distance and the twinkling stars clearly visible at night is all a unique way to relax and have a quiet weekend here. 180 degree view of the Himalayas is a photographers delight, take trekks to temples and mountains. Or even visit the orchards with permission.
The Mukteshwar temple is about a century old Shiva temple. There is a ashram besides of Baba Maharaj Garge. One has to climb the stone steps to reach the top to the temple and the ashram. Shivratri is the main festival celebrated here. After Mukteshwar when you walk forward a little is Chauti Jali which is a rock cliff protruding out nearly 500ft. On the cliff you can look down to the depth below, but you have to be very careful as its too risky and slippery. The local folks believe that a wish made here comes true.
When the sky is clear the Himalayan peaks are clearly visible. The major peaks are Nand kot, Nandaghunti, Trishul, Nanda devi all tower the sky typically snow clad. The Api and Napha peaks in Nepal can also be seen on clear days.
