Salem is best known for its steel plant and stainless steel. It is an important business centre on this circuit. Salem is also a weaving centre. The weaving here is Saeylai (it is a one piece garment which was worn by women before). Yercaud in the Servarayan Hills (Shevaroy Range) of Salem District. It is a quite pleasant hill resort in Tamil Nadu. The name is derived from the Picturesque Yeri (Lake) once surrounded by Kadu (forest).  Yercaud  is a beautiful hill station with a pleasant cool climate.

How to reach

By Air - The nearest airport is Thiruchinapalli which is 140 kms away. An alternative is to use Coimbatore airport 160 kms away.
By Train -  Salem is well connected with rail to all major towns.
By Road -  Well connected by roads.

Namakkal
50 kms from Salem, it is famous for its Hanuman temple and rock cut caves.

Sankagiri
37 kms from Salem, is famous for its historical hill fort of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan.

Tiruchengodu
42 kms from SalemTiruchengodu has been an important pilgrim centre since the 7th century. There is a hill temple of Arthanareeswarar a concept of Shaivism where the diety is part male and half  female.

Mettur
Located 50 kms from Salem and built on the river Cauvery, this reservoir and multi purpose dam is sorrounded by parks and gardens making it an ideal picnic spot.

Hogenakal waterfalls
145 kms away this is one of the wonderful waterfalls in Tamil Nadu. It is a part of the river Cauvery and is about 250 metres above sea level. The main attraction of the falls is its vertical drop from a height of 20 metres with a thundering sound. A sacred bathing place, Hogenakkal is well known for its power of healing

Ideal time to Visit - October to March.
A large part of the state being on the coastal edge of the country, the weather is tropical and sultry for most part of the year. The summer months of April, May, June are hottest where temperature ranges to 40 degrees.

December and January are the peak months for Chennai. The temp ranges from 20-22 degrees. To avoid peak rush October is better. The weather in these months is pleasant and easy to bear the humidity.
