How to reach:
Omkareshwar and Maheshwar is located at a distance of 14 kms from each other. It is connected by rail and roads. The nearest airport is Indore (91 kms) from Omkareshwar and 91 kms from Maheshwar.
Maheshwari sarees are the main things to shop in Maheshwar. Rani Ahilyabai is credited with introducing this uniquely woven saree 250 years ago. The fabric used is cotton and the sari has a plain body at times with stripes and checks in variable patterns. Leaf and floral patterns decorate the borders which are reversible (known as 'bugdi'). The "pallu" is particularly distinctive with five stripes three coloured and two white running alternating across its width.
Omkareshwar and Maheshwar are both temple towns loacted within a couple of hours drive from each other. Omkareshwar the sacred island shaped like the holiest of all Hindu symbols, the Om is located at the confluence of the Narmada and kaveri rivers. Maheshwar on the banks of the Narmada river is mentioned in the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The capital of King Kartivarjun during ancient times the town saw a period of resurgence under Rani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore. Today its temples and fort are a worth visit.
Madhya Pradesh is not called the heart of India only because of its location in the centre of the country. It has been home to the cultural heritage of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainisim and Islam. Innumerable monuments exquisitely carved temples, stupas, forts and palaces are dotted all over the state. The National Parks of Kanha, Bandhavgarh and many others you can spot the tiger, the bison and a wide variety of deers and antelopes.
