Kollam or Quilon is an old seaport on the banks of Ashtamudi lake. Persians, Arabs, Greeks, Romans and the Chinese traded here. The Portugese were the first Europeans to set up a trading centre followed by the Dutch and British. There are some historic remains and the temples are built in ornate style.

Nearest airport is at Thiruvananthapuram 66 kms away. An important rail head os the Southern Railway connected by broad and metre gauge trains. Connected by motorable roads on NH 47travelling is quiet easy.
Places to see
Kollam is one of the principal centers in Kerala for enjoyment of backwaters entertainments. District Tourism promotion council and ATDC operate a number of cruises and holiday packages from the city. There are luxury houseboats in traditional kettuvallams which consists of 67 ft long boat with well furnished bedrooms, sitting cabin, kitchen block and balcony for angling. It is powered with 25 hp outboard motor.
Kollam Allapuzha boat cruise departs everyday from the boat jetty near the central bus station. The houseboat cruises vary for a few hours to a package deal of a few days.
Thangasherry
5 kms away from Kollam is Thangasherry this 144 ft. Thangassery Light House, built in 1902, is a centre of attraction. We can also go inside the light house to have a look. There are several Churches and Mosques in and around Kollam. The Pullichira Church was established in 1700 A.D. One of the oldest and most important Mosques in the Chinnakkada Palli.
Thirumullavaram
6 kms away Thirumullavaram beach and Ashramam picnic Village, are some of the important spots of local sight seeing, Mahatma Gandhi beach lies just 2 Kms. from the town. It is fascinating place for an evening. Thirumullawaram Beach is 5 kms. from the town. The sea here is ideal for swimming and bathing.
Ariankavu, Palaruvi
70 kms from Kollam - Shenkottai road, the chief attraction is here is Lord Sastha shrine. 5 kms from Ariankavu is the palaruvi waterfall.
