How to reach
The nearest airport is the Cochin International airport, located at a distance of 132 kilometers. However, the nearest railway station is at Kottayam, 133 kilometers away. Idukki is reachable by roads as the place is well connected by a wide network of motorable roads. The national highway that passes through this place is NH-49.
Places to see
Cheruthoni
It is the area sorrounding the Idukki arch dam and Cheruthoni dam. Idukki dam first of its kind in India is across the Periyar river between two granite hills. From painavu at a height of 3,917 ft one can see the sunrise, sunset and the surrounding areas of Kochi. One can take a wildlife cruise from Cheruthoni to Kulamavu of 2 hours.
Moolamattom
40 kms from Idulli and 20 kms from Thodupuzha it has an underground power house of the Idukki hydro electric projects. Visitors are allowed in only after prior permisiion from KSEB office.
Peerumedu
75 kms from Kottayam and the summer palace of the Rajas of Travancore. It ia a hill station and an ideal place for rest en route to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary.
Thommankuthu Waterfalls
18 kms from Thodupuzha they are an enchanting sight with scenic beauty and 7 waterfalls.
Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary
The Thattekkad bird sanctuary was set up in the year 1983 by the renowned ornithologist of India, Dr. Salim Ali. One can see the Blue winged parakeet, white-breasted water hen, rose-billed Roller, Hornbill etc here.
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary
60 kms from Idukki, The Chinnar wildlife sanctuary is home to the endangered species of the Giant grizzled squirrel. It is located at a height of 500-2400 meters above sea level.
Eravikulam National Park
15 kilometers from Munnar, this National park includes leopards, tigers, lion tailed macaque, Nilgiri Langur etc.
