Discovery of Shivgiri - A place not known to many, this place is in Chikmagalur. At a height of 4000 ft AMSL, nestled in Yemmedoddi reserve forest, isn't easily accessible.

Distance - Shivgiri is 200 kms from Mangalore and 55 kms away from Chickmangalur.

Directions - Take SH57 to Lingadahalli check post, take a right turn on Lingadahalli Main road to Hogarehalli. Please ask locals here for direction to this village and to Shivgiri. Bumpy ride, no roads, a visit to Shivgiri will be quite an adventure.

No roads or signage and not much information available on internet, this place is completely isolated from the outside world, the nearest village Hogarehalli is 6 kms away. A beautiful place for wildlife enthusiasts and bird watchers.

P.S. The only vehicle that can be driven comfortably will be a bullock cart he he.......

And.... finally we reach Shivgiri, a couple of houses, a 400 years old temple and a resort with lots of greenery. The resort isn't operational currently, thus be prepared to drive or ride down before dark.

What to do

  • Trek to the Siddaragudda peak for awesome views....
  • Birdwatching and animal spotting of sambars, pythons and more... chances of spotting the rare Nilgiri Wooded Pigeon
  • The over 400 year old shiva temple

While returning we took the route from Kalasa, stopped at "The NOW Teashop" for a hot cup of tea. From there we took the Kudremukh route to Mangalore. As always Kudremukh amazed us with some stunning scenaries; mist accompanied with light drizzle and cold climate.
