Belur is a small town in south Karnataka famous for its Chennakesava Temple. During the reign of the Hoysalas Belur was the capital city and the temple was build to commemorate the victory of the Hoysalas over the Cholas in the great battle of Talakad. It is 222 kms from Bangalore.

What to see
Chennakesava Temple
This temple was built in 12th century AD and is an example of medieval art in India. It took 103 years to complete. The temple's exterior is made of beautifully carved stone with sculptures and friezes. Inside, the temple is decorated with richly carved panels and pillars. There is a tall pillar in the centre of the temple courtyard which is balanced by gravity alone, there is no material cementing it.
The Veeranjaneya Temple
This is one of the finest examples of Hoysala architecture. It has sculpted figures of various Hindu gods.
Others
Small shrines of Kappe Chennigaraya, Soumyanyaki, Andal and many temples surround the temple which are also worth seeing.
Tips
An important event is the annual Rath Festival(car festival) which takes place in March/April. The summers are warm and winters cool and pleasant.
