340 km from Kolkata, Malda formerly called English Bazaar, a foreign settlement dating from 1680 is known for its delectable mangoes and the museum which houses the archaeological finds at Gour and Pandua. It provides the base for tourists visiting the historic ruins.

Gaur, capital to three dynasties of ancient Bengal—the Buddhists Palas, the Hindu Senas and the Muslim Nawabs has seen three distinct eras of glory. Kadam Rasul Mosque, Lattan Mosque,Gumti Darwaza are some impressing structures here.  Ramkeli (14 kms from Malda) is a small village enroute to Gaur which was the temporary residence of Sri Chaitanya, the great religious reformer of Bengal. A temple here shows the place where he meditated and his footprints carved in stone. Boro Sona Mosque in Ramkeli is also a huge monument with 11 doors and intrinsic stone carvings.

Historical relics of the 14th and 15th century Bengal particularly worth seeing are the Bara Sona Mosque, Dakhil Darwajah, Qadam Rasul Mosque, Lattan Mosque and the ruins of the extensive fortification. There are colorful enameled tiles on Gumti Gate and Firoz Minar.

Pandua, 18 km from Malda is known for the third largest concentration of Muslim monuments of Bengal. Adina Masjid, built in 1369 by Sikandar Shah is one of the largest mosques in India. Nearby is the Eklakhi Mausoleum, built at a princely cost of Rs one lakh.

The best time to visit West Bengal is October to March

October-March is relatively less humid and is the time of the 10 day Durga puja festival. Sunderbans is also opened at this time for visitors. In summers the temp goes to 38 degrees, and the humidity levels are very high. In winters the temperatures may fall to 10 degrees. Teesta Tea and Tourism Festival is held in November.

The hilly areas of Darjeeling and Kalimpong is best visited from March to June. June to August is the rainy season here.
