January also witnesses the gathering of hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from all over India for the annual Sagar mela held at the Sagar island beyond Diamond harbour.

New Year's Day Racing
Thousands throng along the Kolkatta Race course for the annual ritual of the New Year day's races. For a change the horses take second placeafter the dresses to kill crowds who come to see.
