About Murud Janira
Built by the Siddis over 350 years ago the fort stands in the Arabian seawith strong waves lashing against its walls. It was originally a wooden fortress but what remains today is a brooding structure overlooking a quiet beach where you can spend hours swimming and sunbathing in solitude.
Or you can just walk through the leafy lanes of Murud fishing village dotted by wooden cottages and lined with casurines and coconut palms. The village has numerous restaurants and shacks that serve delectable Konkani cusine. For a panoramic view of the entire bay and the coastline trek up to the temple of Lord Dattatrey which sits atop a small hill.
Other places to visit are the Janjira cave, the palace of the Siddi Nawab and the Padmadurg fortress. And dont forget to take a ferry or catamaran ride to get here or hitch a ride on a bullock cart or tonga.
Clear white sands, whispering casurines coconut and betel palms and an ancient fort in the sea are all what attract tourists to Murud-Janira. The twin beaches of Nandgaon and Kashid are clean and quiet with the island fortress of Murud Janira a few metres from the coast. The fort unconqured throughout its 350 year long history is the only impregnable fort along the 720 km coastline of Maharashtra.
