' The peacheful air here really soothe you when life in Mumbai tires you out. 40 kms from Mumbai but a ferry ride away from the Northern suburb of Malad, Manori is an idyllic island where Portugese and Hindu lifstyles co exist in the most fascinating way.
Traditionally a quiet fishing village Manori retains its old world charm with ancient temples, 16th century churches and a lighthouse which offers a wide angle view of the ocean and the peaceful town. Rickshaws and bullock tongas transport tourists down the narrow coconut palm tree lined roads as the salty breeze and the surge of the surf refreshes your mind, body and soul.
Though there are no five star hotels in manori beach facing resorts offer omfortable cottages. Some private bunglows are also rented out specially to biggies from the corporate world. While most resorts offer activities like volleyball, batminton, cycling, carrom, cards and a swimming pool the ideal way to spend the weekend would be to laze around on the sands in the shade of the swaying palms.Manori is safe for families to stay back during weekends.
For those who do not enjoy the sun all that much the Portugese churches an old Shiva temple and a yogashram are other interesting places to visit. With seven kilometeres of unspoiled coastline, Kelva beach is the longest beach in this region. With thousands of casurina trees, the golden sands of Kelva are a visitor's delight. At the southers end of the beach is the Kelva fort where small boats take passengers from the shoreline. The fort remains inaccessible during high tide. The Kelva dam is a picturesque and quiet spot for a picnic or a cycling trip, but one is advised to leave this place before sunset as transport is scanty.
The Shitla Mata Devi temple is a historic imposing stone structure where hundreds of devotees queue up every Tuesday. The 18th century Shiragaon fort is another towering structure against the backdrop of the Arabian sea. Covered with bushes the fort is a maze of underground tunnels and hideouts. The best time to visit the fort is just after the first showers when the green foliage against the black stone makes the fort a delightful sight. The beach is easily accessible at all times though during heavy rains transportation might be a problem.
