About Bekal

Bekal Fort happens to be the biggest fort of Kerala spreading over forty acres. Bekal fort was not a center of administration for no remains of a Palace are found within the Fort which is quite unusual. Its 30ft high obervation toweronce a cannon emplacement offers a grand view of the magnificient blue green Arabian sea and also the deep green palm forest in their full splendour. A century old guest house built by the British in the fort precincts is being developed as a tourist accomodation facility. Bekal has been declared a ' Special Tourism Area' by the Central Government and the State Government has formed the Bekal resorts Development Corporation to develop it as the country's ' first planned beach destination'.

Just 2.5 kms away from Bekal is Kappil another secluded and serene beach. There is a recently renovated temple dedicated  to Hanuman, at the entrance to Bekal.  An old mosque is also situated very near  the fort and this is believed to have been founded by Tipu Sultan.
